Upcoming Concert

As we prepare for the holiday concert I wanted to put out a few reminders.

Rehearsal- Thursday 5-7 in the band room.  These rehearsals are required and students do receive a grade for attending.  Students  who miss a rehearsal for an approved reason will be given the opportunity to makeup the rehearsal attendance grade.

Concert attendance- Attendance at the concert is also required and the students do receive a grade for this performance.  Concert attire is a part of the concert grade and students should be dressed as follows:

Women: All Black.  A black blouse and dress pants is acceptable and so is a black dress that comes to below the knee.  Black dress shoes are also required.

Men: All Black.  A black button down dress shirt and a pair of black dress slacks with long black socks.  Black dress shoes as well.

Sneakers of any kids are not permitted.

Also there will be a toy drive collection ran by the Pitman Education Association.  Please consider bringing a new unwrapped toy for a child in need.

Jazz Band Auditions and Parent Meeting

Hello Everyone and Happy Holiday Season,

This year in my attempts to streamline more of the Jazz Program and keep things more inline with the Concert Band and Marching Band we tried to utilize Google Classroom to assist with the Jazz Band Auditions.

Although it was not perfect it was a good step in the right direction.

Originally on the calendar I had marked a rehearsal and a parent meeting for tomorrow evening. With so many students who have contacted me to still audition I am going to push back the parent meeting for the moment so we can get all of the parents at one meeting.

I will still be at the school tomorrow evening and any student who wishes to audition may do so after 6pm until approximately 8pm.

I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause and thank you for your constant support (and patience) as we try to improve and connect the music department as a whole!

Students at PHS are permitted to come in to school by 9AM in order to be considered on time for school.  Middle School administration was also made aware of our late arrival from Hershey.

Spring Trip to Chicago, IL

We are moving forward with our Annual Spring Trip.  This year we will be traveling with the Concert Band to Chicago, IL to participate in a variety of educational activities.

We are inviting all instrumental students and parents/guardians of instrumental students in grades 8-12 on our annual Spring Trip to Chicago, IL.  Students will have the opportunity to tour all of the great sites of Chicago as well as participate in a master clinic and a tour of Vandercook College.  They will get the opportunity to perform and work with professors and students of the college.  This is an amazing opportunity for the kids in our Concert Band Program and I would really like everyone to take advantage of this.  This type of learning absolutely cannot happen inside the walls of our classrooms.

Cost of this trip will be approximately 575.00-625.00 and will depend on the number of travelers  Attached is the itinerary for you to review.  It does include some meals as indicated on the itinerary.  Students will need some money to purchase souvenirs and meals not covered.  

We have fundraising available to assist with the cost in the form of Cinnamon Rolls coming in January and Gertrude Hawk Candy coming around the holidays.  All of the proceeds from these fundraisers will directly benefit the individual student to offset this cost.  The PPBA is also a 501C3 organization and if you know of any individual or business owner who would like to sponsor your child for this trip any contributions they make are tax deductible.
 
If you would like to reserve a spot on this trip a non-refundable deposit of 125.00 will be due by the end of November.  You can pay this by check, or using PayPal.  If you wish to use paypal please contact Sally Bierman ( treasurer@pitmanband.org) and let her know that's what you plan to do.

Tickets for this weekend

We do not have tickets to sell for the NJ State Championships at Toms River North Saturday.

We currently have tickets to sell for Chapter Championships on Sunday at Eastern Regional High School.  If you would like to purchase tickets Sally Bierman will be selling them tonight at Pick up and Saturday at drop off as well as lunch.  Tickets are 15.00 for adults and 12.00 for students/seniors.

We also have ACC tickets available for next Sunday's Championship performance and she can sell those to you at the same time as well.

Ticket sales

We sold $282 worth of tickets to the Clearview show!!  Thank you to all the parents (including three alumni families!) who purchased tickets in advance through the PPBA.  If you plan on attending the West Deptford show at Triton next Saturday (the last opportunity for the PPBA to profit from ticket sales), we ask everyone to make that small, extra effort to purchase your tickets in advance through the PPBA to ensure that your donations will support your band member’s music program as opposed to another school’s program.

Clearview Tickets

We will be selling tickets to the Clearview Show at tonight's practice during pick up, after the football game Friday, and at drop-off on Saturday.  Tickets are 10.00 for adults and 7.00 for students/seniors.  So far our parent attendance at shows hasn't been all that great and the kids could really use the support as we move into the championship season.  So if you haven't been able to get out to a show yet Clearview would be a great one to attend because it's so close.  Hopefully, we can see all of you :-)  Bring your orange and black and come cheer on the kids!!!

The weather this weekend has prompted Collingswood to move their show to Tuesday evening.  I was given permission today for us to attend so we are preparing to participate in the show.  Their show begins at 6:00 P.M. and a schedule has not been posted yet.  More information can be found at www.NJATOB.org when it is available.

How about some money to help pay for your first year of college tuition? This fall, NJA, in conjunction with Tournament of Bands, will be awarding 18 scholarships totaling $20,000 in scholarship monies to senior members of our marching bands. The deadline for applying is Noon, October 1, 2015. Applicants must be a member of a marching band in a TOB member school and a member of graduating class of 2016. Awards will be made directly to a college/university financial aid office next summer.

Last fall, NJA awarded $10,000 in scholarship monies to senior members of our marching band. In May, NJA and TIA awarded $20,000 in scholarship monies to senior members of our indoor units and jazz/concert/and choral ensembles. NJA and TOB/TIA Chapters award approximately $35,000 in scholarships annually. To date, NJA and TOB/TIA has awarded in excess of $250,000 in scholarships monies.

Applications are submitted electronically. The deadline for applications is Noon, October 1, 2015. Do not delay.

Thanks you!!!!!

Thank you to Mike Kennedy, Joan Tapken and Teri Reed for taking over the responsibility of running concessions.  This is a very challenging volunteer effort, and we’re very grateful that they’ve stepped up to handle this extremely important fundraising activity.  Their first event was Friday night’s football game, and it was a huge success!  Thank you, also, to all of our parents who volunteered to work concessions last night as well.  It was a busy night, and Mike, Joan and Teri couldn’t have done it without you.

 

Thank you also to Teri Reed for doing an impeccable job with the home show program for us again this year.  Teri actually took time off from her very demanding job to put an enormous amount of time, energy and artistic talent into the finished product.

Enjoy the City Coupon Book Fundraiser

We are currently running the Enjoy the City coupon book fundraiser that will allow your child to put funds into their own band account for use on music related items or trips.

The books sell for 20.00 and your child makes 10.00 for each one they sell.  The sale ends September 17th.  Any unsold books must be returned by that date.  You will be charged 10.00 for unreturned books.

Band Camp Forms

There are three forms that need to be completed by all marching band members prior to band camp.  Please complete them and bring them with you to the band camp meeting on Wednesday.  One form needs to be notarized you are going to want to get that notarized before the meeting.  We may have a notary at the meeting for you.  If you have any difficulty getting the forms notarized please let us know.

Band Apparel Order Form Available

The 2015 Band Apparel order form is available by clicking the link here.  If you wish to order any items please fill out the form and submit payment through PAYPAL.  If you wish to send in a check the check must be given directly to Mrs. Bierman BEFORE August 5th so items can be ordered.  Please do not send checks into Mr. Carey.


As we go forward we will also begin to collect shoe sizes from your child.  A separate order form will be posted for those items.  You will also be receiving instructions on how to send your band camp deposits through PAYPAL.  

Mandatory Band Camp Meeting-

All children in marching band must have a parent attend the Band Camp Meeting scheduled for July 22nd.  At that time your band camp deposit will be due of 50.00 per child and any payment for any marching band items will be due at that time as well.

The total cost of band camp will be approximately 265.00 per child which includes meals, lodging, band t-shirt and 2015 marching band show shirt.  Any one having difficult making this payment must contact a member of the PPBA executive committee to arrange a payment arrangement.  We are more than willing to help out you just need to let us know what we can do for you.

Student Absences-

The students were all given contact information for our student leaders.  When they expect to be absent from a rehearsal they need to contact them by calling.  Please note that text messages will not be accepted.  The handbook is available online and outlines what types of absences are excused and unexcused.  Please review this document with you child as well as the calendar located on the website.  No absence will be excused without a phone call.

Jazz Band Competitions - Finals and Overbrook

Hello all, 

This is quite a busy and hectic week for every one as the competitive portion of Jazz Band is wrapping up. Tuesday night we take the stage at Overbrook. Students have been given all of the information and reminded, but just in case here are some of the details. Students were told to report at 4pm, our performance time is at 6 pm, and we hope to return home between 10 and 10:30 pm. It is a school night of course so we are trying to get home as soon as awards are done. If you decide to look up directions make sure you have the Overbrook HS in Pine Hill, New Jersey on Turnersville Road, not the Overbrook HS in Philadelphia.

Saturday evening we have Cavalcade of Bands Championships for the Glenn Miller Division. The Cavalcade website has no schedules posted but I had informed the students over a week ago that we were definitely on Saturday night. The location is Arcola Middle School in Norristown PA 4001 Eagleville Road. The students are reporting to the school at 4:30 pm, we perform at 7:45pm, and awards are at 10:40 pm.  I am estimating that we will not be home until after midnight somewhere around 12:30 to 1am. 

As we discussed in the meeting at the beginning of the year the schedule is prone to change and quite frequently the best way to obtain information concerning the schedule is from your jazz band member. The online calendar and website are forms of convenience to assist. I remind the students at each rehearsal of our upcoming schedule including performances and times. I feel that this is an integral part of the students growth as musicians and as young adults. Students being responsible for knowing the times, dates, and information is something I feel is not out of reach even though some may be learning this skill for the first time. The students have been excellent with this in all of my years of teaching and I have found that they learn a great deal from any "mishaps" that occur. If your student is unaware of the information or missed rehearsal I do encourage you to have them contact another band member first, then have them contact me, and finally if there is still a question please feel free for you to contact me.  This may not be the norm I understand but it is what I feel is a great tool in growing the students to be responsible young adults and accountable for themselves. 

Last but not least a huge congratulations and thanks to Chris Cancglin, Sophia Falciani, Ben Bierman, and JB Muermann as they are members of the COB Glenn Miller All Star Band that will perform at championships. They joined me Sunday in a rehearsal and I am really looking forward to directing two excellent bands this Saturday night.

Concert Band Festival

I just wanted to give all the parents an idea of our schedule for next Tuesday's performance at the region concert band festival.

We will be performing at Rowan University to be adjudicated and rated.  We will be leaving PHS at 8:00 AM and are scheduled to perform at 9:00 AM. in Pfleeger hall.  After we perform we will be returning to PHS by 10:30 AM.

The performance is open to the public so you are more than welcome to come and see us perform.

Disney Trip

Our flight for this evening has been cancelled and I have worked with the airline to reschedule our flight.  We will be home Tuesday evening around 5pm.  We have made arrangements to stay on he Disney property for the next two nights.  We will be stashing at all star movies.

Disney Updates

Hey Everyone, 

We've had 3 excellent days down in Florida. Our first day in Animal Kingdom was perfect. Yesterday we had an awesome morning at the workshop and then came back to EPCOT to enjoy glimpses of the future, learning about the sea and land, amd then touring the world before we finished the day with Illuminations. Today we hung out with Aerosmith, took some exciting elevator rides,  dined where the stars do,  got back stage tours around the Muppets, played in the Toy Story Midway, learned about Walt Disney's life and dream, and traveled to galaxys far far away.  But we all made it back to enjoy the Fantasmic show together.

Boston Trip Last Minute Changes

Hello All, 

Unfortunately due to the cancellation of school on Tuesday we are no longer able to depart as early as I hoped. The jazz band will now leave the school as close to noon as we can. Students first obligation is to finish their exams and then we will be able to proceed. I also wanted to touch base on a couple more items pertaining to the trip. 

I am really excited to see so many families joining us this year. Thank you so much for coming. If anyone was planning on following the bus I would recommend meeting at the high school at noon. 

There is always the possibility of inclement weather. There is also always the possibility that what is predicted will be wrong or change. The utmost importance to me is always the children's safety and we will never put them in a situation where it is unsafe to drive. If there is an issue where we are in Boston and have another snow storm hit we will make the decision to either leave early or stay longer then anticipated to allow for the safest possible travel conditions. It is also important to keep in mind that New England is much more prepared for snow fall then we tend to be. 

Finally I wanted to take a second and thank everyone for the support at out performance at Bus Stop Music Cafe on Friday night. The turn out was amazing and it was so great to see alumni and their families also join. I have truly sought to build an atmosphere that the band, current and former members, are a family and all part of a growing tradition. I see now that many of the parents and families of the members are also becoming part of that tradition and from the bottom of my heart I would like to say thank you. Your support of all the hard work the students put in truly makes my job easier and provides the students with such a great experience. Once again thank you.

Jazz Takes Over the Bus Stop Music Cafe

This Friday, January 23rd, the Jazz Band and Small Group are taking over Bus Stop Music Cafe in downtown Pitman to present an evening of Jazz and more. The groups will perform 2 sets with the first beginning at 7pm. There is a $8 cover charge at the door with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the bands travel expenses. We are really looking forward to a great night and a great turn out. Spread the word to friends and family as this is the last (and only) chance to see the band and small group before they head off to compete in the Berklee College of Music Jazz Festival next week. Boston Trip

Hello Everyone, 

This evenings rehearsal featured a lot of information being passed on to students and I just wanted to take a second and pass that on to you as well. 

The final cost for the trip is sitting around $165. This is not final however as we have had some circumstances that are causing the number of members attending to be in question. The final cost will be definite on Tuesday night. The good news is it will not jump up much higher then the $165, if it moves at all. 

Next, I handed out the medical forms and permission slip forms this evening. These forms must be completed. If you have already completed the permission slip and had it notorized because you were in marching band I will still need a copy for the jazz band, just not notorized.  The medical form is the same If you filled one out for marching band I still need a copy for the jazz band. 

Students also received a packet with information concerning the trip. This packet also requires your signature. A itinerary will be available next week as we are finishing up details concerning our schedule on Friday. The students have mid terms that day and school comes first, so we are doing our best to adjust the schedule to allow students ample opportunity to fulfill their obligations that morning. 

I am really looking forward to this trip and am extremely excited about those of you who are joining us in Boston.

Jazz Festival Planning Meeting

Thursday Jan. 22 we will be having a meeting to plan for our annual Jazz Festival.  All parents are encouraged to attend especially those with children in our Jazz Ensembles.  The meeting will begin at 7:00 in the PHS Choir room.  If you are unable to attend and would like to volunteer please email secretary@pitmanband.org and let us know what you will be able to do.

Summer Music Camps for Anyone Interested

I am writing on behalf of the 2015 WCU Elementary School and Middle School Summer Music Camps and the High School Summer Music Institute. I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you about our programs and to pass along the attached brochures and applications.

Our Elementary School and Middle School Camps (Monday, June 22 - Friday, June 26) offer large ensemble and small ensemble experiences for all students, low student-to-teacher ratios, and daily faculty recitals. Both camps culminate with finale concerts featuring performances by all ensembles. Our Elementary School Camp now features an Elementary School Choral Track- please see the attached flyer for more information. We now offer online registration (with a credit card) for our Elementary School and Middle School Camps- please encourage your students’ parents to visit www.wcupa.edu/SummerMusicCamps (the online registration link should be posted sometime soon).

Our High School Summer Music Institute (Monday, July 6 - Saturday, July 11) offers large ensemble and small ensemble experiences for all students, private lessons and studio masterclasses, college prep classes, music theory/ear-training classes, faculty recitals, and finale concerts featuring all ensembles. The Institute’s faculty consists primarily of WCU music professors. We offer an Honors Track (DVD audition required) for advanced students- please consult the brochure for additional information. Acceptance into the Honors Track will include participation in advanced chamber music ensembles. 

Our Jazz Camp (Sunday, July 12 - Friday, July 17) offers jazz ensemble performance opportunities for instrumentalists and vocalists. Instruction is offered in the areas of jazz improvisation, jazz styles, arranging and orchestration, music technology and jazz history. Please contact Marc Jacoby (mjacoby@wcupa.edu) if you have questions about the Jazz Camp.

I’d like to remind those of you who teach high school students about our HS Summer Music Institute scholarship. The scholarship, awarded annually to an incoming freshman WCU music major who attended our HS Institute, is a $2,000 award ($500 per year for four years). Please pass this info along to your students who plan to apply to WCU and encourage them to attend our HS Institute in order to be considered for the scholarship. We also offer scholarships and pre-screening WCU entrance auditions for rising seniors who plan to apply to the WCU School of Music- please visit www.wcupa.edu/SummerMusicCamps for more information. 

I have attached the applications for the EL/MS camps, the EL choral flyer, and the brochure and application for the HS Institute/Jazz Camp. Please forward this email to your students’ parents and encourage them to take advantage of our early registration discounts- deadlines can be found in each brochure.
